Believe

I just started my summer focus course for my Master’s Degree. I only have 2 courses left and I graduate!!! This focus course is on the History of Christian Spirituality. It holds lots of interest for me. One of the questions in the first session is to name 4 passages from the Old Testament and 4 passages from the New testament that have cultivated my spirituality. I truly enjoyed pouring over the Bible to search out passages. I will not go through all of the passages. However, two of them have similarities for me.

In the Old Testament, Psalm: 139 – 1-16 “you know when I sit and when I stand….Where can I go from your spirit…If I ascend to the heavens you are there…you formed my inmost being: you knit me in my mother’s womb. I praise you, because I am wonderfully made; wonderful are your works? In your book all are written down; my days were shaped, before one came to be.” I feel that passage in my soul. That God created me and knew me before I was born, that God is with me and I will never be apart from him. I have a true appreciation for the Psalms because they are filled with poetry, wisdom, and lament, cries, praise, and the constant of seeking God. More than anything the theme of being with God without fail even before I was born.

In the New Testament, Romans 8:31 – For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, not principalities, nor present things, nor future things, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” This has completely formed my spirituality from a very young age I feel that I am NEVER separated from the love of God. With God by my side I feel guided, led, portected, safe, empowered and ready to do His will.

Much of my Christian Spirituality comes from the understanding within my spirit that God has, is, and always will be with me. Regardless, of good or bad circumstances I am never alone. Knowing that God is there has given me a spirituality that I believe is very deep and unending.

What passages have helped to form your spirituality? How?
