For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light, for light produces every kind of goodness and righteousness and truth.

Try to learn what is pleasing to the Lord.”

– Ephesians 5: 8-10

If we live in the light of God we are children of the light. The love and goodness of God can radiate through our lives. We have to open our lives up to this type of living. God created each one of us and was pleased. God gave us each free will. God is pleased by our love, kindness, openness to seek justice, faith, and care for all of humanity and creation.

When we become selfish and turn our wants and needs inward we become self seeking. We need to look outside of our own worldly desires and selfish wants. We need to look outward at the people and world around us. When we are looking out instead of caught up within, then we love. Love, is willing the good of another. We cannot love if we are obsessed with self.

We are children of the light when we allow God’s love to flow through our thoughts, words, actions, and lives. It is easy to get caught up in the darkness. Our culture is intrigued by the darkness. “The darkness is insatiable, the light has a call that’s hard to hear” – Indigo Girls. It is true, our curiosity is engaged with the dark side of life. Resist the darkness and turn towards the light. When I have moments of darkness that tempt my soul I pray out loud “Satan Get Behind Me. God please help me!” It is difficult but saying it enough times gives me the strength to walk away from that dark temptation. The light and love of God leaves one feeling fulfilled, the darkness leaves guilt, shame, and a residue of ill will. I tell my children often how they need to pay attention to the music they listen to and the things that they read. Everything they are exposed to will have some effect on their lives. Keeping our lives as pure as possible is crucial in living as Children of the light. It is not the “cool” way to live. But I think a relationship with God is more important than being “cool”. If you find like minded friends they will be seeking the same light as you.

Walk away from the darkness and allow God to shine through your life and embrace God’s love.
