Shadows, November 18 Daily Reflection

Trisha looking at her shadow

Trisha looking at her shadow

Trisha was so fascinated with her shadow.  Not sure if it belonged to her, wondering how it followed her, growing longer and disappearing all together at times.

A shadow is defined as:  A partially or totally unilluminated area, caused by an object blocking rays of light. In essence the only way we can cast a shadow is by blocking light.  How often do we block light in our everyday lives?

We get in the way of the LIGHT constantly.  Just the other day I was thinking to myself when I was out for a long run how I should “spread a little God” by waving to people in cars I did not know.  Having strong  insecure  feelings about waving to strangers kept getting in the way. When I want to just be bold and say “You made a difference in my day, Thank you” to a friend for a small act of kindness I block that sunlight.  When we turn our backs to God we block the sunlight and remain in the shadows. It seems so much easier to hide in the shadows, to blend into the scenery  or to not be seen at all.  Who wants to put themselves out there and say “I believe” in front of everyone they don’t know or do know for that matter? It is comfortable not making our selves vulnerable so we block the light.

It may be more comfortable and easier but should we do that?

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden.  Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lamp stand, where it gives light to all in the house. Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly father.”

Matthew 5:14-16

The easiest, smoothest, neatest path is not always the right path.

Today trust your instinct to wave to the stranger, to say what you feel from your heart, to listen to God, to do what God puts in your heart.

Today stop blocking God’s call, put your own security aside, make yourself vulnerable, stand in the sun and let it illuminate your soul so that you may no longer block it but shine in it.

Step out from behind the shadow and let your light shine for others to see that God is with you.
