"Sunlight

Sunlight flooding the farm

The light shone so brightly one could hardly keep their eyes open, closed one could still feel the heat of the sun upon the eyelids. Squinting eyes trying to make out what was in the distance. Sunlight flooding from above. Just as quickly the tractor pulled the hayride through a clustered area of trees where the light flickered between the leaves and then relief from the light able to open eyes and relax them one could see again.

We all have times like that in our lives where we feel the power of God’s presence with us so closely that we don’t have to question it at all. We know at the birth of our child God is present. We know when we have loved with all that we are selflessly that God is present. We know when we have given and feel the goosebumps and tears in our eyes of feeling like we have done good that God is present. In those times of our lives without a doubt God covers us with that blinding sunlight flooding our heart, soul and mind.

It’s when the tractor goes into the wooded area that the light begins to flicker and to fade that we begin to question. Then when the clouds cover the sun and only gray can be seen that is when we need our faith to kick in. When we have to say goodbye to good friends who move away for a job in a new city. When we see our children struggle with school, friendship or just growing up. When we see our parents age and loved ones die. When that light fades and we question where God went. Where is that light that overwhelmed us only moments earlier?

Faith is not based on seeing it is based on believing. In the blinding light, in the shades of gray and in the absence of all light in the darkness believing you are not alone.

“Although you have not seen him you love him; even though you do not see him now yet believe in him, you rejoice with an indescribable and glorious joy, as you attain the goal of [your] faith, the salvation of your souls.”

1Peter 1: 8-9

We each walk daily between the flooding light, flickering rays, shades of gray and pitch black darkness. That is just our way. Without seeing and feeling we must have faith. If you have that faith it will guide you not easily but it will help to hold you up when you can no longer stand. It will let you rest when you are to weary to take another step. God will comfort you and embrace you with His love and warmth to quell the pain. Faith with light or without it will give you all that you lack in the Love of God. You just have to believe.
