The Cross

The Key to Christian Life is Love.

What a simple statement. If we love everyone our family, friends, enemies, strangers, Jesus Christ…God then we are living as Christ lived…as Christians.

However, many Christians would disagree with this statement. It is good and just to live in love but that is just too simple. No, to live as a Christian we must have rules, regulations and laws. We must love those who follow the law. We must complicate everything with human authority. “We” are like the Pharisees of Jesus’ time. They believed in the law to the point of forgetting its true meaning. Laws, rules, regulations and religion are not bad. It is when we lose sight of their purpose that we abuse those guidelines.

Each time I develop a new retreat I write a mission statement, goals and objectives. I want to make sure that the retreat is given a purpose and that I stay true to that purpose. Many of us in our workplaces have to do mission statements, goals and objectives. If Christ was to make a mission statement I think it would be this:

“He said to him, “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.”

– Matthew 22: 37-40

Maybe it’s time that we each evaluate our mission statement in this life. We should live this statement in all that we do day in and day out, in all our thoughts and all our words, and let it be our mission in life. If we want to call ourselves Christian then quite simply put we must love everyone.
